Joel
Berman
CoFounder / Executive Director
Joel
Berman lost his left leg above the knee in a Chicago, IL railroad
accident in the summer of 1981. After three years rehabilitation,
Joel re-entered the workforce and been active in adaptive sports
& recreation for the past 20 years. Joel has an extensive
background in corporate management, corporate real estate, and
finance. While in Chicago, Joel specialized in derivative products
arbitrage and corporate money management for 10 years.
After
relocating to Colorado 1994, Joel became more involved with
disabled sports and recreation. His passion for working with
the disabled community resulted in 10 years as a volunteer
instructor for the National Sports Center for the Disabled,
and a subsequent certification as a PSIA-certified adaptive
ski instructor. His combination of business experience and
personal experience, led to the creation of Adaptive Adventures
in 1999. He has extensive experience in alpine skiing, fishing,
paddle sports, sailing, and adventure trips. Joel, his wife
Karen and their sons Jacob and Sam recently moved from beautiful
Evergreen, CO to their new home in Wilmette, IL. Back in Chicago,
Joel has started a second branch office for the organization
and is developing Adaptive Adventures participants, programs,
and volunteers in the region.
Joel's
extensive experience in company development, management, and
disability make him ideally suited as the Executive Director
of Adaptive Adventures.
